General research focus: The genetics of complex traits

Disease susceptibility, as well as many diseases have a genetic basis. The research in the Medical Genetics Department (groups Ophoff, Koeleman and Cuppen) focuses on the identification and understanding of this relationship. The section performs experimental and bioinformatic research in the field of human genetics, including genome-wide bioinformatics, biostatistics and genome-wide association studies. The groups are looking for the genetic factors in complex multifactorial diseases, particularly diabetes, epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, schizophrenia, and VUR.
Furthermore, the use of next-generation sequencing technology is explored for application in patient and population research studies as well as for personal genomics and pharmacogenomic approaches.
